New research published in Psychological Science indicates that certain personality shifts in adolescents can produce practical benefits for their early career.
Current opinion in academia appears to accept that personality traits aren’t completely fixed and can change over time. New research published in Psychological Science indicates that certain personality shifts in adolescents can produce practical benefits for their early career.
In the study, results revealed that certain patterns of personality change (or growth) predicted career outcomes above and beyond factors including adolescent ability. The strongest predictors were:
Increases in emotional stability linked to higher income and career satisfaction
Increases in conscientiousness predicted higher career satisfaction
Increases in extraversion linked to higher career and job satisfaction
This suggests that interventions supporting your adults to increase particular traits and behaviours could have a significant positive impact on their transition into working life and assisting them in achieving their particular career goals.
It should also be cause for optimism with young adults undergoing personality assessments in both career and education settings, highlighting the ability for these traits to change, grow and develop rather than being something they are stuck with!
